kurmanali matikeev

Prof. Kurmanali Matikeev is a distinguished scholar specializing in the physical geography of Central Asia and the historic geography of the Kyrgyz nation. He is affiliated with Osh State University, located in the historic city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan. Prof. Matikeev has published over 200 research articles, including 30 monographs and textbooks, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 encyclopedias of geography, both during and after the Soviet Union. He was the founder of the Department of Geography and Natural Sciences at Osh State University (formerly Osh Pedagogical Institute) and served as its inaugural Dean from 1980 to 1994.

He also held the position of inaugural Director of Fundamental and Applied Research from 1999 to 2000 and was the first Director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Mountain Research in 2000. Additionally, he served as the Head of the Department of Geography and Physical Geography and Modern Concepts of Natural Science from 1982 to 2021, where he continues to teach today. As one of the few experts in physical geography in post-Soviet Central Asia, Prof. Matikeev has mentored numerous doctoral students and has trained thousands of professionals in the field. 

He served as Chairman of the Dissertation Defense Council on Geography and Natural Sciences of the Academy of Science of the Kyrgyz Republic from 1997 to 2011 and is currently a member of the Dissertation Defense Council. Prof. Matikeev is often invited as an expert in the doctoral defense Councils of Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.  He has also initiated and implemented many applied research projects. Selected works by Prof. Matikeev include notable monographs such as “Moving Continents” (1976, Moscow), “From Hot Deserts to Snowy Mountains” (1982, Frunze), “Patterns of Distribution of Forest Landscapes in Central and Middle Asia” (1994, Moscow), “Secrets of Grey Tian-Shan” (1997, Frunze), “Central Asia in the Epoch of Manas” (1995, Bishkek), and “Kyrgyz, Manas and Historic Geography” (2012, Bishkek).
